William B. Rose is Research Architect at the Building Research Council-School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His major field of university research involves water and its effects on buildings. He is the author of "Water in Buildings: an architect's guide to moisture and mold" published in 2005 by Wiley & Sons. This book won the Association for Preservation Technology Lee Nelson Award. His current university research has included sky radiation effects with solar reflective roof surfaces, combustion product concentrations in houses with un-vented combustion appliances and much more. He is the handbook chair of ASHRAE TC4.4, responsible for four ASHRAE Handbook chapters on building envelope performance, and he is a founding member of ASHRAE Standard Committee 160P Design Criteria for Moisture Control in Buildings. Through William B. Rose & Associates, he consults to museums and historic properties on moisture issues. Some well known buildings/project he has consulted on include the United Nations Building, Sagamore Hill (Home of T. Roosevelt), and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Mr. Otero has been in the Cleaning and Restoration industry for twenty-three years, 13 years in the restoration side and 10 years in the distribution of cleaning and restoration equipment by being employed with Bridgepoint / Interlink Supply. Eleven of those years was with COIT services, one of the most successful worldwide cleaning and restoration franchises. His passion for the restoration industry is now being shared through the new technology of Direct Heat Drying & the Remote Field Commander. Mr. Otero is certified with the Dri-Zone ASD class, Vortex Drying, IICRC certified in CPT, UPH & WRT and is also certified with the Reets Drying Academy. In the last 24 months Mr. Otero has taught over 150 educational seminars & CEC events to approximately 3000 restorers, insurance agents and adjusters in the United States and Canada. He has also had the privilege of speaking at Connections Convention, RIA, FIRARS conference and DRC Convention & The Experience.

This week while Radio Joe and the Z-man are on the road, we flashback to a show with a true IAQ legend- Dr. Philip Morey. Philip R. Morey received his Ph.D. degree in Biology from Yale University and is certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Dr. Morey has held various teaching positions including Lecturer of Biology at Harvard University and Professor of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University. He has also held a research position (Research Microbiologist; Research Industrial Hygienist) while at The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in the 1980s and was subsequently Director of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)/Microbiology at several consulting companies. Dr. Morey was/is Principal Consultant Microbiology at ENVIRON International Corporation. Dr. Morey was one of the panelists for the first consensus mold remediation guideline published by the New York Department of Health in 1993. He was Assistant Editor of the 1999 American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control book. We plan to ask Cyndi Sullivan a patient of Irene Grant, MD these questions and more. Cyndi called us after our show with Dr. Grant and asked about doing a show for people and patients that have issues with dampness and mold. We talked and we agreed that everyone can learn something from each other and that professionals can certainly learn from those we are trying to help. What's wrong with the U.S. Housing Industry and How do We Fix it? DOE Chief Architect Sam Rashkin joins IAQ Radio this week to discuss this topic and his book "Retooling the U.S. Housing Industry- How it Got Here, Why it's Broken and How to Fix it?. For Sam housing is personal, it has been his focus for all of his career starting as an architect designing energy smart homes up to his present position as Chief Architect for the US Department of Energy.
As Chief Architect for the Department of Energy's Building Technologies Office, Sam's primary role is leading deployment of successful research for new and existing high-performance homes. This includes developing and helping lead DOE's world-class research program, Building America, developing a new resource tool that will make latest innovations and best practices fully accessible to residential new construction and retrofit stakeholders, and overseeing a completely revamped DOE Challenge Home voluntary labeling program for leading edge home builders. In his prior position, he managed ENERGY STAR for Homes since its start in 1996. Under his leadership, ENERGY STAR for Homes grew exponentially to more than 8,500 builder partners, over one million labeled homes, and over 25 percent market penetration nationwide. Irene Grant, MD, CAC is an Internist and Infectious Disease Specialist, which equips her to recognize and manage challenging medical conditions, especially in those with different types and degrees of weakened immunity. As an Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Grant has treated a wide range of pediatric and adult patients with different immune deficiencies, medical conditions and infectious complications. Her premedical work experience and research in bacterial microbiology has equipped her to understand the processing of specimens in the microbiology laboratory, interpret results and reports and communicate effectively with microbiologists and industrial hygienists. As an Infectious Disease Specialist she has encountered and treated countless patients with fungal complications. She has extensive experience with diagnosing and managing fungal infections in patients with documented heavy exposure to environmental molds and persistent mold-related illness. A significant portion of Dr. Grant's current practice is dedicated to monitoring and treating patients with environmental mold exposure and persistent mold-related illness, including allergic, toxic and invasive infectious complications requiring treatment with anti-fungal medications. Through collaboration with industrial hygienists and mold-remediation specialists, she has helped patients identify sources of their illnesses and eliminate continued external mold exposure. This week we are live from the New Jersey shore at a conference organized to help explore issues and find answers following Super Storm Sandy. The conference is presented by the Fungal Research Group Foundation-the same group responsible for the Bioaerosols, Fungi, Bacteria, Mycotoxins in Indoor Environments and Human Health conferences since the early 90s.
Joining us this week will be three people attending the conference and more importantly working directly with those affected by Sandy. Tom Peter, CIH is VP of Insurance Restoration Specialists of Monroe, NJ. Since October he has been working in many of the Jersey Shore schools, commercial buildings, municipal buildings, residences and schools in the NY-NJ area. Mike McGuinnis, CIH, CIAQP is founder of RK Environmental of Phillipsburg, NJ. Mike is also busy helping business owners, contractors and residents of the NY-NJ Shore area consulting on mold and other indoor environmental contamination issues. Pete Consigli is a friend of the show, frequent contributor and restoration industry watchdog.
