This week on IAQ Radio we will be discussing Baubiology & Electromagnetic Fields (EMF's) with Nichole Bijlsma. Nicole is the founder of the Australian College of Environmental Studies in Melbourne, Australia. She is an accomplished naturopath, building biologist, writer and author who conducts lectures to doctors, natural therapists and builders about the health hazards in the home. Apart from an Honours degree in Acupuncture, she completed further training in Guangzhou TCM hospital (China) in the early 1990s and has extensive experience lecturing in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Naturopathic philosophy at various universities and institutions. Nicole is a woman of passion, and her passion lies in environmental medicine. She first became involved in healthy homes as a result of two events in her life; firstly experiencing ten miscarriages after moving into her first home from what she now believes to be exposure to a high level magnetic field (from the meter box) and secondly, when she began to notice the extent to which the environment was causing illness in many of her patients particularly children. This week on IAQ Radio we are going to talk about one of the best if not the best document EPA has developed in 20 years. Terry Brennan and Lew Harriman join us to discuss the EPA document "Moisture Control Guidance for Building Design, Construction and Maintenance". If you do not have this document in your library, get it!
Terry Brennan was the lead author for the EPA's new Guidance for Moisture Control in Buildings. He is a founder and managing partner of Camroden Associates, a building science consulting firm located in Westmoreland, New York. He began his career as a physics major at Northeastern University, but some how, some way got diverted into building science, working on the earliest research into radon problems and radon behavior in buildings, and moving on to energy and moisture issues. For the last 40 years, he's spent more time crawling around damp basements and hot attics than most normal people would find pleasant. But in return for those decades of investigation, Terry knows a LOT about what makes buildings tick... how they go wrong... and how to make sure they don't.
Lew Harriman was a contributor to the new EPA guidance for Moisture Control in Buildings on the HVAC aspects of moisture control. He began his career as an architecture student at Dartmouth, but after five years as an Air Force officer, he went to work for a manufacturer of dehumidification systems, and got permanently diverted into HVAC engineering, where he's spent the last 38 years. He is the founder of Mason-Grant Consulting, a building science consulting firm located in Portsmouth, NH. He is active in ASHRAE as the vice-chair of technical committee 1.12 (Moisture Management in Buildings), and is an ASHRAE Fellow and Distinguished Lecturer.
LEARN MORE about moisture and moisture control on IAQ Radio today at noon eastern with Terry Brennan and Lew Harriman!

Natural disasters occur globally and with real time cell phone and media coverage seem to occur with greater and greater frequency. Structural resiliency, disaster preparation and response are studied and researched at institutes of higher learning around the world. This week Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana hosted I3R2 the 10th International Conference of the International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction where conference delegates from North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia met to collaborate on better practices to prepare and execute effective disaster response.
Technical presentations were made by the CDC, Society of American Military Engineers, Army Corps of Engineers; and 31 technical presentations were reviewed. A first ever panel discussion between emergency responders and academia was also part of the program. Pete Consigli organized the panel and the Z-man was one of the panelists. This week on IAQ Radio we traveled to Purdue to LEARN MORE and to broadcast our own round-table panel discussion about the Purdue Building Construction Management program and the 10th I3R2.

This week on IAQ Radio Alison Johnson, Chair of the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Foundation, will be our guest. We recently did a show with Steve Temes on this issue and he has since joined the board of the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Foundation. He suggested we get Alison on to further discuss the issue and we got it done. Multiple chemical sensitivities are touchy subject for IAQ, disaster restoration and building science professionals. What is MCS? Is it a one size fits all issue? How do we work with the chemically sensitive? How do we avoid making things worse for the chemically sensitive? Mrs. Johnson graduated from Carleton College at the head of her class. She studied mathematics at the Sorbonne on a National Science Foundation Fellowship and received her Masterâ??s degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, studying on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. In 2010, she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College for her work in the field of chemical sensitivity. Ms. Johnson has published three biographies: : Wallace Stevens: A Dual Life as Poet and Insurance Executive; Henry James: His Life Revealed Through His Letters; and Louis XVI and the French Revolution. She has also presented her book Gulf War Syndrome: Legacy of a Perfect War and 9/11 documentaries on Capitol Hill, in New York, Washington, San Francisco, Seattle, London, Wiesbaden, Halifax, Ottawa and Montreal. We are privileged to have her join us this week as we continue to seek to LEARN MORE on IAQ Radio!
